As for the actual version (2.11) there will be no Win 7 tut since it does not work on Win 7.

Well I have been snooping around in Win 7 and it looks like it could work. I am still doing some homework on a couple of files. I extracted the Install.wim file and found the USB files, strange how they are almost exactly like the XP ones LOL.

However, I have not found the equivalent to the Dosnet and Txtsetup. I think the txtsetup is now the global install list that is in xml.

The other thing I need to figure out is how to repack the install.wim file, I can extract the files with 7-zip (I love that program) but not sure if it can repack the file.

Am I going down a road that has already been tried with no luck?

Well after a few long hours of reading and playing I am getting close. Seems like I am missing something. Here is what I did and found out:

Unless you have an ESATA, you will have to take your external HD and install it inside as the primary drive. I know Win 7 will install on an ESATA with no problems but not all puters have that slot and I need portability vs performance right now.

Anyhow Win 7 installed on the external HD with no problems, but here is where I am stuck, I put the HD back in the external case, changed the INF files (USB, USBPort, USBStor) and then tried to boot from the ext HD. It will boot for a second, will get the windows logo and all then it reboots itself.

From this one forum post I have been reading http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?showtopic=22473&st=0

It seems like I need the one file but I cannot DL it, but seems I need to do some regedits but not sure how to do it, if I cannot load Win 7.

Any Ideas?

Thanks,

Dave

Dave,
I am working on one removable HD (USB) with Windows 2003, XP Pro and Windows 7 Ultimate in a multi-boot. This will not work on W7, however, I'm not needing anything to boot up W7 via USB - it's working just fine. The HD "non-removable" bit was set; that's the only thing we changed. W7 was installed to a VM first, then moved to the removable. Unless something occured regarding USB in that scenario, we changed nothing to make it boot connected to a USB port and it works fine...

Windows 7 works on removable HD. But its not easy when you dont know where to start.
The trick with the rebooting problem after installing on an usb drive is setting the registry right.
easiest way is to use this tool

works really good. just run this script from a working windows with your usb drive attached and it will fix the problem. idea

There is a new version of Windows Embedded, wich is based on Windows 7, maybe you may want to see it for a new version of USBoot. biggrin
