booting USBoot XPspk2 from folder on extended logical partition?

user offline
hi Gerd,

I am trying to multi boot USBoot XP from a folder in an extended logical FAT32 partition from the boot.ini in the USBoot on first active partition (C:\)

it boots through arc and service guards and disk checking then the first blue windows XP screen where I have a cursor and then stays there. its not froze because the cursor can move arround but it wont continue to boot from this point.

any idea what is problem?

it boots fine from extended logical partition at the root but not when copied into a folder.

I am trying to multi boot two seperate USBoot XP from the same partition seperated by folders.

I use this boot.ini entry:

boot loader
timeout=5
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
operating systems
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(4)\WIN1\WINDOWS="USBoot activated Windows 1" /fastdetect /noexecute=optin
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(4)\WIN2\WINDOWS="USBoot activated Windows 2" /fastdetect /noexecute=optin

mabey its the problem?

thanks

Though it is possible to install Windows to a subfolder whose name differs from the standard "Windows", this cannot be achieved in the way you tried.

Windows contains a lot of references to system files and folders that are stored in the registry upon installation and won't reflect any changes to boot.ini and so not be aware of any changes without explicit adjustments.

So if you wanted to move an installations root folder you would have to make the necessary changes to these paths, too.

Alternatively you could create two installations from scratch with differently named system folders. But even in this case some items like the 'programs' directories of both installations would collide.

I have been testing in multibooting USBoot in different partitions with good success and this was the next step but it seems it will take much more time and trouble than it is worth to me.

thanks for your insight.

Gerd, will USBoot copy to a second primary partition on the target drive?

I have dual booting working with 2 USBoot from different source OS but when I try to dual boot USBoot with two copies from the same source it defaults to the first partition so I cant boot the second one.

thanks

sorry, I mean copy using Phase-III to target drive second primary partition.

Did you accomplish all steps of phase III or just the transfer?

yes, Im using the same Phase-I and Phase-II and I am asking if it works to use Phase-III on both partitions. I know it allways works on primary partition that is empty with no other partitions on the drive but will it work (transfer) to the second empty primary partition (when a USBoot allready exsist on the first primary)?

thanks

Booting from devices with multiple partitions is not officially supported by USBoot. However usually it should be possible (at least internal tests work without any issues).

An installation that has been subjected to phases I and II may be subsequently used as source for repeated runs of phase III with different targets.However it is crucial for success to accomplish a full phase III for EVERY transfer of an prepared installation!

Keep in mind that you will have to either mark the second partition as active boot partition or to modify 'boot.ini' on the active first partition to start the installation on the second logical volume.
