Hi guys and girls,
to successfully install Windows XP on a USB-Stick each and every time, you must first make your USB-Stick bootable by doing the following:

ALL CREDITS GO TO: http://www.bootdisk.com/pendrive.htm

Before installing XP on a USB-Stick, make your USB-Stick bootable by performing steps 0 - 3. Perform step number 4 only if you JUST wish to be able to install any windows from your USB-Stick.

This must be done within an Windows Vista or Windows 7 installation. After these steps you can use an XP (SP3) installation to perform the USBOOT phazes.

0. Insert your USB-Stick into the system and backup all the data from the USB as we are going to format the USB to make it bootable. EXIT (below) is just a command.

1. Insert an Windows Vista or Windows 7 dvd into your disk drive.

2. Click on START, write CMD on the search field and open it AS ADMINISTRATOR.

3. In this step you need to enter all the below commands one by one and hit enter after each and every one of them. The infos between brackets are not to be entered.

DISKPART
LIST DISK (shows you the disk number of your USB stick, as you can see mine is 1)
SELECT DISK 1 (Replace "1" with your disk number)
CLEAN
CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY
SELECT PARTITION 1
ACTIVE
FORMAT FS=NTFS (Format process may take few minutes)
ASSIGN
EXIT
D: (Change “D” with your DVD drive letter.)
CD BOOT
BOOTSECT.EXE/NT60 H: (Change “H” with your USB drive letter)

4. Copy Windows DVD contents to USB. (to just be able to install any windows from the USB, otherwise skip this step).

You are done with your bootable USB. You can now use this bootable USB as bootable DVD on any computer that comes with USB boot feature (most of the current motherboards support this feature).

Note that this bootable USB guide will not work if you are trying to make a bootable USB from within an XP installation environment. Must be done from within Windows VISTA or Windows 7.
